UEFI and Windows 8.1 running on VMware Workstation 10

In order to play around with Windows 8.1 (x64) and UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) on VMware Workstation 10, we can add one line to the VMX file.

firmware = "efi"

After this change select Power On to BIOS

You should now see this dialog instead of the traditional BIOS.

After installing Windows 8.1 (x64) we will se that the BIOS Mode is UEFI.

And that Partition style is GPT:

So it’s very simple to enable UEFI support in VMware workstation.

This will of course also work on Windows 7 and as a bonus enable you to boot from a USB stick, so that you for example will be able to test SCCM USB bootable media in VMware.

  1. Thanks Lars
    I have two identical "empty" VM's where I used this method to set firmware = "efi". On VM #1 it works fine, on VM #2 it reverts to firmware = "bios" when I poweron, changing the vms file as well. VMware 10.0.2
